Abstract

The 1950s witnessed the growth of the new rhetorical research of Perelman and Tytka, culminating in their book "A Treatise on Argumentation: A New Rhetoric." They sought to liberate argumentation from rhetoric and logic. In this theory, argumentation studies the techniques of discourse that lead the recipient to accept and submit to the presented message. The goal of argumentation is to achieve persuasion. Perelman sees no difference between argumentation and rhetoric, as their objective is similar: to persuade and influence the audience. Moreover, rhetoric is distinguished by its argumentative nature. Therefore, their work aimed to distance argumentation from the realm of rhetoric. Perelman drew upon Aristotle's ideas on rhetoric, attempting to revive classical rhetoric but from a contemporary perspective. The goal of argumentation is to lead the recipient to acceptance and subsequent action. Argumentation has specific features and functions, and we will apply the key elements of this theory to the discourse analysis of Fatima al-Zahra's (peace be upon her) sermon delivered to the Muhajireen and Ansar after the Prophet's passing. The Most Noble (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).
