The illocutionary force of the Nominal Sentence in Natural Languages A Pragmatic and Rhetorical Study

Abstract

Objectives: This research explores the text's authority and its socio-individual influence—a prominent linguistic field rooted in traditional heritage. It specifically illuminates the illocutionary force of the nominal sentence, examining its capacity to effect tangible change in reality despite its inherent informative nature. By synthesizing linguistic and rhetorical theories to analyze pragmatic intent, the study substantiates the performative power of nominal constructions.

Methodology: Utilizing an analytical framework that bridges classical Arabic rhetoric and modern linguistics, the study examines propositional and illocutionary significance, distinguishing between informative (khabarī) and performative (inshāʾī) utterances. It investigates how nominal sentences generate illocutionary effects through the dynamic interplay of intentionality, context, and syntactic stability across diverse discursive situations.

Results: Findings indicate that the nominal sentence, notwithstanding its informative essence, possesses a robust illocutionary capacity that achieves the intended pragmatic impact. The study confirms that illocutionary force is not exclusive to verbal predicates but extends to both informative and performative nominal sentences, thereby broadening the understanding of the relationship between language and context.

Conclusion: The research demonstrates that linguistic performativity transcends verbal classes to encompass nominal sentences, deepening the understanding of the nexus between language, thought, and context. By validating the use of nominal sentences for tangible illocutionary effects, this study opens new horizons for future interdisciplinary research in rhetoric, pragmatics, and the philosophy of language, further enriching the conceptualization of performativity in Arabic.
