Obstacles to establishing a democratic political system in Iraq after 2003

Abstract

Studies and research dedicated to examining and diagnosing the challenges hindering the establishment of democratic political systems worldwide, particularly in third-world countries, stand out for their ability to uncover and analyze scientific and objective factors behind the failure or limited success of democratic experiments. Many such nations, through their modern and contemporary history, have encountered significant difficulties in achieving sustainable democratic governance. Given that Iraq falls within this classification, it currently faces substantial obstacles in building a democratic political system following the regime change in 2003. These challenges are broadly categorized into social, economic, political, and cultural dimensions. In response to this scenario, the researcher has attempted to explore, study, and identify the overriding issues within each category. Socially, the entrenched tribal-clan system continues to dominate Iraq's societal structure, presenting a major barrier. Economically, the country continues to struggle with a rentier economy heavily reliant on singular resources. Politically, the weakened role of the middle class in shaping and steering the political process after 2003 represents another key limitation hindering progress.
