Abstract

Disputes are major causes of poor performance in construction projects. Escalated disputes result in complicated disagreements whose resolutions are expensive, take longer, and impact relationships. Disputes management has a powerful function to ensure successful performance. Identifying the most frequent claims and disputes from past projects, their origins and causes could be a sturdy policy for effective management. This study aims to diagnose the most common main and root causes of claims and disputes in Iraqi building projects in order project participants to incorporate integrative claim management strategies before actual construction. A sample of 70 projects were selected for this purpose. Root cause analysis (RCA) using Fishbone diagram was employed to explore the relationships between the main and root causes of claims. The results can enable international and local professionals to adopt strategies prior to getting involved in projects and thus reduce the negative effects of early known problems with effective planning.
