Abstract

Security Council has formed 28 committees and investigative teams since its inception to this day, with the latest being the investigative team affiliated with the United Nations (UNITAD) to enhance accountability for the crimes committed by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. This team was formed by the Secretary-General's request after a request from the Iraqi government to the Security Council to prosecute members of the terrorist organization ISIS. The Council adopted its Resolution 2379 in 2017, which calls for the formation of an investigative team using an innovative approach. The Council sought to benefit from the team's independence and its capabilities that meet international standards, as well as to ensure full cooperation and interaction with the Iraqi authorities. The team began its investigative work in 2018 and is currently collecting information and evidence related to the organization's crimes to strengthen accountability. These pieces of evidence are numerous and diverse, including witness interviews, forensic evidence, crime scenes, and the analysis of recorded videos and captured images of the commission of crimes, among others. Based on this, the investigative team (UNITAD) operates, always understanding the reasons why the Council agreed to the request of the Iraqi government, which are: defending the survivors' right to justice, establishing an unquestionable record of committed crimes, and thereby exposing the falsehood of the narratives used to justify the international crimes committed by the terrorist organization ISIS, also known as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
