The 1975 Algiers Agreement: An Analytical Study in Iraqi Newspapers (Al-Jumhuriya, Al-Thawra, Al-Ta'akhi, Tariq Al-Sha'ab) Selected Examples

This study aims to analyze the Iraqi newspaper coverage of the Algiers Agreement between Iraq and Iran in March 1975, by studying a sample of four daily newspapers: Al-Jumhuriya , Al-Thawra , Al-Taakhi , and Tareq Al-Shaab. The research adopted a qualitative content analysis approach to trace the way the agreement was addressed in terms of the motives behind its conclusion, its most prominent provisions, and its regional and international dimensions. Focusing on the representations of the Arab and international positions in these coverages , the study found that Iraqi newspapers unanimously presented the agreement as a positive step toward resolving Iraqi-Iranian disputes and enhancing stability in the Gulf region, while ignoring the negative aspects related to the border concessions or their repercussions on the Kurdish movement. This reflects the nature of the official media, which was subject to the control of the political authority at the time. These findings reveal the importance of journalistic sources as historical documents, but they also highlight the need to engage critically with them to uncover the limits of their objectivity and highlight what they overlooked due to political directives.
