The research deals with measuring the impact of external sector sustainability indicators on economic growth for the period 2000-2023. To achieve the research objective, the quantitative method was used to measure the relationship between them through the regression model (ARDL) for quarterly data. It is clear that external sector sustainability indicators are important variables affecting economic growth, especially for a country like Iraq, which depends on more than 90% of its revenues on oil exports, in addition to the fact that they constitute 98% of total exports. The research gave the following results.
- The short-term relationship indicates the significance of the variables (current account to GDP ratio, import reserves ratio, reserves to external debt ratio, net direct investment, coverage rate) at statistically acceptable significance levels and with a positive effect on the dependent variable, which indicates the effectiveness of the impact of external sector sustainability on growth. The correction parameter CointEq (-1) reached (-0.385725) at a significance level of (1%), which indicates the existence of an equilibrium relationship between the studied variables in the short term, and that the correction rate is about (38%) of the short-term changes in the economic growth rate in the previous period t-1) can be corrected in the current period t) towards the long-term equilibrium relationship.
- As for the long-term relationship, we note that the effect of net foreign direct investment on growth is negative and statistically weak, and (the ratio of current account to GDP, the ratio of reserves to imports, the ratio of reserves to external debt, the coverage rate) had a positive significant effect on growth, while the effect of the ratio of foreign direct investment to GDP was significant and negative, due to the fact that outgoing capital is more than incoming capital, which makes net investment negative in its effect on the sustainability of the external sector in the long term, in addition to its negative effect on economic growth.
