Abstract

This research dealt with the role of international peacekeeping operations in the settlement of international disputes, and it was found that the legal basis for these operations lies in Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations Organization, and it is formed by a decision of the Security Council based on its basic tasks of maintaining international peace and security, in which it has discretionary power broad based on Article (39) of the Charter of the United Nations. The study showed that the intervention of international peacekeeping operations in internal conflicts does not contradict the principle of state sovereignty. Because the consent of the parties to the conflict is a prerequisite for the performance of these operations, and therefore they cannot proceed with their tasks without the official acceptance of states, and they also have the means to settle international disputes, whether they are of a military nature such as monitoring the cease-fire and protecting the areas placed under protection. The United Nations, disarmament and demining, or the means may be non-military, such as supervising elections, national reconciliation and upholding the rule of law.
