Russian strategy in the Black Sea for the period 2008/ 2014

After the collapse of the Soviet Union and the independence of most of its countries, the Russian Federation faced major challenges, including NATO's eastward expansion to include some countries in the Black Sea region. Russia viewed this as a threat to national security, due to NATO's plans to impose a strategic encirclement on Russia and thus weaken its global role.
Therefore, the Russian strategy was to respond to these plans and work to break the encirclement by preventing Georgia from joining NATO through the Georgian War of 2008. This war demonstrated the strength of the Russian Federation and restored its prestige and influence with the countries of the former Soviet Union. Through this war, Russia was also able to limit the American and European role in the region.
A phase of Russian-Western competition subsequently emerged in the region through the conclusion of numerous political and economic agreements and security alliances with the countries of the Black Sea region.
