Abstract

Abstract

This research focuses on studying the phonetic phenomena in the dialect of one of the ancient Arab tribes of the Arabian Peninsula—namely, the tribe of Banu Yarbuʿ. Yarbuʿ is part of the Bedouin tribes inhabiting the eastern region of the Arabian Peninsula, specifically in Najd, as well as in al-Yamama, Basra, and Kufa. They are a branch of the larger tribe of Banu Tamim.

This raises a valid question about the necessity of this study, given that Yarbuʿ is a subset of Banu Tamim, a tribe that has already been examined by several researchers. The answer lies in the fact that, although Yarbuʿ shares certain linguistic features with its parent tribe (Tamim)—due to geographical proximity and tribal affiliation—it also diverges from Tamim in a considerable number of phonetic phenomena. Moreover, it differs from other tribes as well, and this divergence is precisely what this study aims to highlight
