Mandatory Criminal Provisions in Light of Linguistic Rules A Study of the Iraqi Penal Code No. 111 of 1969

Perhaps the most significant challenge facing legal scholars and practitioners is the interpretation of legal texts in general, and criminal texts in particular. Since the interpretation and understanding of texts depend heavily on a sound understanding of linguistic rules, I found it appropriate to link the understanding of criminal texts with the understanding of linguistic rules.
I must mention that some studies have addressed this topic, but most of them were in the field of linguistics, not law. The number of legal studies I found is very small, if not rare. Therefore, this thesis attempts to find a useful place for itself among other studies. I must also mention that I have taken the imperative forms in the texts of the Iraqi Penal Code No. 111 of 1969 as an applied example of what I want to research. These forms are commands, prohibitions, and restrictions, each of which requires adherence and compliance. Regarding the topic, I hope I have presented a scholarly work that will benefit researchers. I do not claim perfection in this research, for perfection belongs to God alone.
