Linguistic Strategies of Thematic Transitions in Al-Anbiya and Ash-Shu'ara Quranic Chapters
A Pragmatic Approach to the Quranic Discourse Structure

Given the various purposes and diverse objectives in Quranic chapters, this research seeks to address the following scholarly question: Do thematic transitions rely on specific linguistic strategies, or are they random and arbitrary shifts dictated merely by the flow of sentences and the arrangement of topics and ideas? To answer this, sacred Quranic discourse is posited to employ distinct linguistic strategies for thematic transitions, i.e. strategies that take into account the communicative context and its objectives. The study focuses specifically on Al-Anbiya and Ash-Shu'ara chapters to examine and test this hypothesis.
The present study is divided into three sections, preceded by an introduction that defined the concept of "linguistic strategies." In the first section, the objectives, specific themes, and thematic unity of each of the two chapters were identified, concluding with a mind map illustrating the objectives of each. The second section addressed the strategies employed for thematic transitions between the main axes of each chapter, analyzing them from both syntactic and pragmatic perspectives. The third section examined the linguistic strategies employed to transition between the topics of the sub-paragraphs within each thematic axis of the two chapters. These strategies were analyzed and compared to reveal their significance and pragmatic functions within the syntactic structure, thereby substantiating the research hypothesis. The study confirmed the validity of the research hypothesis; identifying the linguistic strategies used for thematic transitions along with their respective frequencies; and elucidating the pragmatic functions performed by each strategy within the Quranic discourse. Finally, the study recommended the continued application of this methodological approach in Quranic studies.
