Abstract

In modern Arabic poetry, the phenomenon of using symbols and invoking religious and heritage figures to express poetic experiences has spread. The mask in modern Arabic poetry is a kind of inspiration from the Arab heritage, and it is related to the symbol. If the poet used the symbol and made it include the whole poem, then that is the mask. The mask is an important artistic method used by the contemporary poet to express his thoughts, attitudes and personal experiences. Badr Shaker Al-Sayyab is one of the poets who used this style in their poems. This research aims to study the symbol and the mask in the poem "Christ after the Crucifixion" by Badr Shaker Al-Sayyab, and the extent to which the poet is appropriate to the experience of Christ (), and how he deals with this character, through the descriptive-analytical approach. The results of the research indicate that the symbol and the mask in al-Sayyab's poetry are a way to express his experiences and what he suffers from. Al-Sayyab employed the story of the crucifixion of Christ () in his poetry to establish a kind of parallel between the experience of the crucified Christ and his personal experience. He adopted this religious character in his poem, expressing through it an indirect expression of his political and social ideas.
