The Principle of Human Dignity in International Humanitarian Law
A Study in Light of the Verse of Honor

Verse 70 of Sura Al-Isra affirms the Principle of Human Dignity, considering it a gift from Allah, exalted is He, to mankind. Here, the main question of the research arises: Does this dignity include all people, including the believer and the disbeliever, the righteous and the deviant, the immoral and the just, or is it exclusive to the those who believe in Allah? This is what the researcher seeks to answer by explaining the meaning of the noble verse and the opinions of the interpreters, and analyze and discuss it according to the objective interrogative interpretation method, supported by the descriptive and Riwaie approach (interpretation based on narrations).
The study proves that the honoring in the verse is for the human being himself, regardless of what distinguishes him in terms of religion, belief, gender, origin, wealth, or any other similar standard. This result is consistent with the contents of a set of noble narrations, and the opinion of most interpreters. The research also aims to prove the most important basic principles in international humanitarian law, which is the principle of human dignity, from the blessed verse. Accordingly, a number of other humanitarian principles also stems from this principle, such as the principle of distinction between civilians and combatants, the principle of treating the wounded and caring for them, and the principle of respecting the victims of armed conflicts and prohibiting mutilation of their bodies. Accordingly, all practices that are not in line with humanitarian principles in armed conflicts are in clear contradiction with the teachings of the message of Islam and its tolerance.
