Relationships and Interconnections Between Ethics and Lawaccording to Teachings of Nahj al-Balagha

Abstract

This research examines and analyzes the vision presented by Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) regarding the profound relationship between morality and law, as stated in Nahj al-Balagha. The Alawite teachings are manifested as a unique model that blends spiritual values ​​and legal principles, and reshapes political authority according to the balance of justice and conscience. For the Imam (peace be upon him), the law is not based on coercion or abstract interests, but rather on moral rules that regulate the relationship between man and his Lord and with people, and guarantee dignity and equality for every individual, regardless of his social or religious position. In this context, the concepts of respect for the subjects emerge as indispensable moral foundations for the establishment of any legitimate government. The research reveals how Imam Ali (peace be upon him) practiced these principles in reality, whether in his oversight of governors, his organization of public funds, his rejection of discrimination in the judiciary, or his insistence that the ruler be the first to abide by the law before holding others accountable for it. Perhaps his letter to Malik al-Ashtar is a refined example of a profound, wise vision. The law requires mercy, the ruler requires conscience, and society requires comprehensive justice. Through an analysis of texts and positions, it has become clear that Imam Ali (peace be upon him) did not separate religion from politics, nor law from morality. Rather, he considered them a single system, and if one of its pillars is impaired, the entire structure collapses. This makes his teachings an important foundation for rebuilding Islamic jurisprudential and political thought on a foundation of moral justice and sound legislation. Accordingly, this research contributes to highlighting the Alawite heritage as an intellectual and practical reference that can be inspired in building the modern Islamic state, where law and morality are integrated, and authority is exercised with a spirit of humility, responsibility, and fear of God, rather than out of a desire for dominance and control.
