Verse 3 of the table, table today, Ghadir Khumm, ArafaAbstract
Interpreters differed about the validity of the word “today” in the verse of completion. Some commentators saw that it refers to a specific day, and others went to say that it does not refer to a specific day, but rather the general meaning of the day. The question that arises here is, does the Qur’an mean by the word “today” in this context a specific day, or did the word come in its general meaning? And if he means a specific day, when is that day? Most of the Shiite commentators are of the view that the “today” in this verse means a specific day, and they say that it is the day that the Messenger of God (may God bless him and grant him peace) revealed to me to appoint Ali (PBUH) as caliph and appoint him over the nation of Islam, and it is the day known as the day of Ghadir Khumm. As for the interpreters of the Sunnah, they see that the meaning of the “today” in this verse is the Day of Arafah, which is the Friday on which God completed the obligations and rulings upon the nation of Muslims. This study tries, through the view of the Sunnis, and by relying on the analytical descriptive methodology, as well as relying on the textual and mental narrations, that the credibility of the “day” in this verse is that it must be a specific day, which is the day of Ghadir Khumm.
