Abstract

Ernest Hemingway is considered one of the most prominent novelists and short story writers of the twentieth century. His short novel The Sheikh and the Sea is the last notable work of fiction to be published during his lifetime. This novel is also considered a milestone in fictional literature, as it has outstanding literary qualities that enabled its author (Hemingway) to obtain the Nobel Prize. It tells the story of the human tendency to the dilemma of skepticism and faith in the same critical situations. Therefore, the study assumes that there are some decisive factors that created the protagonist, Santiago, as one of the characters representing the Stoic philosophical trend. The study also focuses on Santiago's qualities such as perseverance in strength and patience in his struggle against nature
