The ancient Arab poets described the night as long and short, and added it to names and terms that symbolize the meanings and indications of its length and shortness and reveal it. Wonderful, frank and suggestive, they attributed the length of the night and its shortness to reasons and causes that sometimes differ from some and agree with others. In the length of the night and its shortness, they have opinions and positions that are composed at one time, and differ at other times. Some of them describe the nights of separation as long and the nights of union as short. Some of them shorten the nights of youth and lengthen the nights of gray hair. Some of them consider the night short in one town and consider it long in another. Some of them do not believe in the length of the night and do not recognize its shortness in the first place. And some of them like it all night long, and others hate it and get tired of it. And they have reasons for this disparity in attitudes and differences in directions, and their expressions about the length of the night and their opinions about its long moments, its short hours, and its long durations reveal their emotions and embody their concerns during the night. And when they create artistic paintings to depict their suffering and the grief and pain they experience and enjoy during the night, expressions, methods, and expressive images that draw attention to them and study them.
